Edradour the ultimate

About

Ballechin is Edradour Distillery's peated expression, named after a closed Perthshire farmhouse distillery that operated until 1927. The name honours a legendary whisky-making location where Alfred Barnard, the renowned whisky cataloguer, once travelled. Edradour itself, founded in 1810 by local farmers, remains Scotland's smallest distillery. Ballechin is defined by its diverse cask philosophy: the distillery matures its smoky spirit across bourbon, sherry, rum, and Madeira casks. This approach yields bottlings where peat and sweetness collide in unexpected ways—smoke anchored by honey or stewed fruit, or sharpened by salt and mineral edges. The typical Ballechin profile is oily and tactile, smoke as foundation rather than dominator. Toffee, red fruit, and dark chocolate emerge and fade. The finish turns dry and peppery, earthy layers lingering long after the glass is set down.
