Scapegrace was founded in 2014 by brothers-in-law Dan McLaughlin and Mark Neal, initially celebrated for award-winning gin. With Vanguard, they announce their arrival in whisky: in 2024, this single malt claimed gold and Best in Category in the no-age-statement class at the World Whisky Awards. It is deliberately young—matured for just a few years—yet mature enough to win international recognition.

The whisky matures in virgin French oak casks, an unconventional path for single malt. This choice defines Vanguard's character: lightly peated, with a freshness you wouldn't expect from youth. New Zealand barley and Southern Alps water contribute terroir—geographical identity rather than distillery tradition alone.

In the glass, Vanguard unfolds continuously. The nose offers honey, damask rose, and stewed pear, joined by spice and walnut. The palate brings a playful mix: toffee and vanilla supported by bright fruit (apple, pear) and subtle tannins. The finish delivers warmth without weight—honey and toast with a whisper of spice. This is a whisky that doesn't stand still; it evolves glass to glass.
