Bourbon Hogshead

About

Càrn Mòr is the independent bottling label of Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, the same producer who impressed this year with the first-ever release from their Aberargie distillery. This Clynelish 2014 is part of a series MSWD released across different markets — all matured in bourbon hogsheads. With only 264 bottles produced, this is a rare chance to sample a young, unfiltered Clynelish at cask strength. The nose opens with bright fruit: apple, kiwi, and peach. After a few minutes, the whisky's trademark waxy and buttery notes emerge alongside delicate layers of icing sugar. On the palate, the texture is creamy, with crystallized honey, chalk, wet pebbles, and a pinch of white pepper. Ripe yellow fruits follow. The finish is medium length and almost earthy at times, before vanilla-like notes return alongside stewed apple and pear. This is a very good, expressive single malt that captures Clynelish's character—though somewhat muted by its youth. Still, it speaks clearly.
