About
Ballechin is Edradour Distillery's peated expression, named after a defunct farm distillery in Perthshire that closed in 1927 — a nod to a legendary chapter in Scottish whisky history. Edradour itself was founded in 1837 by local farmers and continues to distil in small pot stills, which gives Ballechin its distinctive intensity. Andrew Symington (Master of the Quaich) has crafted The Ultimate bottlings to showcase how Edradour's spirit evolves across diverse wood types. These releases mature in sherry butts, bourbon barrels, rum casks, and madeira — each imparting its own signature. It's a philosophy of exploration rather than a single house style. The nose opens with smoke and caramel, dried fruit and bonfire ash. The palate is thick and oily, layering chocolate, salted caramel, and earthy peat. The finish is long and heavy, with pepper and mineral edges that cut through the sweetness.
