Blue Spot traces its lineage to 1887, when Michell and Sons began marking cask bungs with coloured dots to denote age—a system that gave the Spot range its distinctive name. These whiskeys emerged from a historical practice where Jameson's distillery sold new make spirit to independent bonders, who matured it in wine and fortified wine casks. Blue Spot, the entry point in the current lineup, spent seven years in a trinity of ex-bourbon barrels, ex-Oloroso sherry butts, and Portuguese ex-Madeira wine casks.
Bottled at cask strength (58.4%) without reduction, this single pot still whiskey retains the full impact of its maturation. The three-cask approach layered complexity: bourbon barrels contribute vanilla and softness, sherry butts add dried fruit character and tannin structure, while Madeira casks introduce exotic fruit and spice.
On the nose, the whiskey presents rich, syrupy fruit—tropical notes and caramel apple. The palate follows with restrained spice—cinnamon, clove, black pepper—balanced against honey, toffee, and almond. The finish is warm and persistent, with stewed fruit flavours and a prickling tannic grip that slowly subsides.
