Dewar's The Ancestor

Port Charlotte 2013 Barley
Bunnahabhain means 'river mouth', and this 1881-founded distillery on Islay's northern shore lives up to its name—a whisky shaped by maritime geography and peated tradition. This 1997 vintage captures the distillery's full character: a complex, uncompromising single malt with the salt and smoke that define the location.
The nose reveals layered peat smoke, hot florality, and mineral sea-air, with eucalyptus and butter caramel emerging from sherry maturation. The palate is viscous and packed—lemongrass, coriander, and smoky spice mingle with cocoa and almond, anchored by pronounced oak and salinity. The finish turns bitter-sweet and herbal, then dries toward asphalt, leather, and a lingering peat ash that refuses to fade.
This is assertive Islay whisky, unpolished and unapologetic. It rewards those who embrace smoke and salt over refinement.
