The Macallan was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and schoolteacher, in Craigellachie on the banks of the River Spey. The Double Cask collection represents a modern take on Macallan's heritage: an equal marriage of American and European oak, both seasoned with sherry, that balances American vanilla sweetness with European warmth and depth.
This 15-year-old expression is fuller and more mature than its younger siblings. The nose reveals honey, dried fruit, and vanilla with soft oak tones and baked apple. On the palate, a rounded, richer character emerges—toffee and chocolate tempered by gentle spice and nutty undertones. The finish is warm and gradually fades with lingering oak.
A welcoming dram that proves Macallan's reputation rests on more than branding. The precision in cask selection and the interplay between two oak profiles give this whisky genuine character and balance.
