The Antiquary stands as one of the world's longest-established blended Scotch whiskies. Founded in 1888 by brothers John and William Hardie, Edinburgh wine merchants, it takes its name from Sir Walter Scott's 1816 gothic novel. After decades in relative obscurity, Tomatin Distillery acquired the brand in 1996 and recently revived it with a carefully considered reformulation.
This 15-year-old expression was married in Bordeaux red wine casks, a choice that fundamentally shapes its character. The blend draws 45% from Highland and Speyside malts—delivering the expected citrus and vanilla—with a measured addition of Islay malt for subtle smokiness. Extended maturation in French, Portuguese, and Spanish oak adds layers of complexity.
