2001 Elixier Distillers, London

1995 Distillers Edition
A'Bunadh—Gaelic for 'of the origin'—honours James Fleming, the distillery founder who perfected this spirit in the 1870s. The name carries another legend: during Aberlour's renovation in 1973, workers uncovered a hidden bottle from 1898 sealed behind a wall, a tangible link between past and present. When A'Bunadh launched in the late 1990s, it was a radical move—a no-age-statement, cask-strength single malt matured entirely in first-fill Oloroso sherry butts. That boldness sparked a following; collectors track batches obsessively, and A'Bunadh has become a global cult whisky.
Bottled at 59.6% ABV without dilution, this is uncompromised sherry maturation. Each batch varies subtly with the casks, keeping the release dynamic and collectible. The distillery's commitment to Oloroso—not the cheaper Pedro Ximénez—underpins the whisky's character.
The nose floods with dark berries, raisins, and rich sherry perfume. On the palate: thick, warming, with cherry, dried fruit, toffee, and assertive oak tannins. The finish stretches long and rough—bittersweet spice, dark chocolate, raw barley, and a dry oak bite that announces cask strength without apology.
