The premise is straightforward: by employing exclusively sherry casks and natural colouring, the depth of amber hue reflects the maturity and complexity of the whiskies within. The Macallan was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a farmer and schoolmaster, at Easter Elchies estate in Speyside.

Amber contains whiskies aged 8–18 years, matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks of Spanish and American oak. This combination delivers a full-bodied spirit despite its modest 40% ABV.
