Cask Strength 2023

38 Y Stone of Destiny
Famous Grouse began in 1896 when a wine merchant named Matthew Gloag and his son started blending whiskies from different Scottish regions. Nine years later, in 1905, the blend received its now-famous name — after the bird that roams freely across the Scottish Highlands. This was whisky for Scottish gentry, not the masses; only decades later would Famous Grouse become one of the world's best-selling blends.
The blend combines malts such as The Macallan and Highland Park with grain whiskies from across Scotland — Lowland, Highland, Speyside, and Islands — and marries them together in oak casks for six months before bottling. This process of selection and patience shapes its characteristic profile: soft and warm, without harsh wood edges.
In the glass, Famous Grouse reveals itself as a whisky that promises more on the nose than the palate delivers. Sweet and malty, with toffee, raisins, sultanas, citrus peel, and a subtle hint of smoke — but the taste itself remains light and approachable, peppery and spiced without drama. The finish is short and warm, with lingering pepper. This is not a whisky that surprises; it is one that can be relied upon.
