Natural Cask Strength

Lagavulin takes its name from Lag a' Mhuilinn, Gaelic for 'hollow of the mill', a fitting echo of the bay where it sits. The distillery itself grew from illicit stills operating since the mid-1700s, until farmer John Johnston established it legally in 1816. A century later, James Logan Mackie transformed it into one of Islay's most singular producers.

This Natural Cask Strength expression matured for twelve years in refill bourbon casks married with virgin oak—a formula introduced in 2022 to add structure and grip. At cask strength (57.1%), that young wood speaks plainly, sharpening the spirit's edges.

On the nose: oily sweetness breaks into citrus, sea salt, and wood smoke. The palate is thick and viscous—bonfire ash, candied lemon, honey, vanilla—all undercut by bright citrus notes. The finish is long and uncompromising: peat smoke and spice linger without apology. This is Islay without softening.
