The Antiquary was born in 1888 when brothers John and William Hardie, Edinburgh wine merchants, created their first blend. Named after Sir Walter Scott's 1816 gothic novel, the brand carries a distinctly Victorian character. Today it is produced by Tomatin Distillery under Japanese ownership, continuing a legacy that makes it one of Scotland's longest-standing blended whisky brands.
This blend is built on a notably high malt content—45% Highland and Speyside malt—balanced with a touch of Islay malt for light smokiness. Maturation combines ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, followed by a lengthy marriage in French, Portuguese, and Spanish oak. This layered approach gives The Antiquary its characteristic depth and subtle complexity.
