Japanese Harmony, Master's Select
Togouchi Pure Malt is a blended malt whisky from Chugoku Jozo (now under Sakurao Distillery), based in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima. For decades, the company sourced Scottish and Canadian whiskies, aging and blending them in Togouchi — a converted railway tunnel 362 metres long. The strategy was straightforward: many Japanese drinkers find the smoky, assertive character of traditional Scottish single malts difficult to enjoy. By marrying Scottish malt with grain whisky, a far more approachable profile emerged.
Pure Malt is understated and gentle. The nose is shy — mainly malt and hints of vanilla, with only a whisper of smoke. On the palate, citrus and grain appear, with a lightly peppery mouthfeel. The finish stays soft and malt-focused, without significant depth or length.
