2006 Especially Bottled For Whiskyzone
The Ternary Project
The Ternary Project is Bruichladdich's homage to experimentation—a blend of three malt types (Port Charlotte, Octomore, and unpeated Bruichladdich) matured in three cask classes: ex-bourbon, ex-Oloroso, and virgin oak. The name reflects its tripartite structure: three spirits, three cask types, three maturation profiles. This is Bruichladdich innovation at its core: not reverence for tradition, but willingness to challenge it.
The first-fill cask combination yields an intense, layered character. Port Charlotte brings its trademark smoky individuality, Octomore adds depth and funk, while unpeated malt tempers with fruity elegance. The nose opens with sweet orchard fruit and peat smoke, undercut by subtle salt. The whole feels bolder and more direct than conventional Islay releases.
On the palate, peppery and dry notes lead—sugary ashes—before rich stone fruit and milk chocolate emerge. The finish is where floral and stoned fruit shine brightest, before peat smoke and dried fruit linger and fade. This is a whisky that doesn't court easy approval; it rewards attention with genuine complexity.
