Kura is the whisky venture of Helios Distillery, founded in 1961 in Okinawa as a rum producer. The name 'Kura' references the traditional barrels in which awamori — the local fermented spirit — is aged. For this Rum Cask Finish, Helios imported a blend of Scottish malts, then matured them in the very rum casks the distillery had used for its own production. It's a rare example of Japanese finishing ambition: not in Japanese oak or sherry, but in the house's own spent rum vessels.
The nose presents a striking mix of smoke and sweetness — smouldering embers with dried apricot, vanilla, and a herbaceous, green edge. The palate brings umami and earthy tones, with notes of almond, green apple, and honey that soften the smoke. The finish is dry and ashy, with a distinctly rustic character.
