Connemara Original

4.0 out of 5 (1 review)

Named after the cultural region in County Galway, Connemara is actually produced at Cooley Distillery in County Louth—a deliberate move by founder John Teeling to revive forgotten Irish whisky traditions and challenge the Irish Distillers monopoly. It stands apart as one of the few widely available peated Irish Single Malts, drawing inspiration from 18th-century malting practices where barley was dried over peat fires.

Traditional copper stills and peated malt create a distinctive character: smoky but never harsh, rounded by honeyed sweetness and heather florals. The palate reveals the full story—honey, malt, and vanilla emerge clearly, with peat providing earthiness rather than dominance. The finish carries warmth and cereal notes, leaving a gentle smoke.

This is an Irish whisky that carries Highland Island character but retains the smoothness and body Irish distilling is known for. A natural choice for those seeking an Islay alternative without the bite, or for anyone wanting to explore beyond the standard blend.
