William Lawson's was created in 1849 and takes its name from William Lawson, a Scottish-born export manager who worked for a Dublin spirits company in the 1880s. He persuaded his employers to name their blended Scotch after him—an unusual move that evidently paid off. Today the brand is owned by John Dewar & Sons, a Bacardi subsidiary.
This blend emphasizes a high malt content, contributing to its soft, accessible character. The nose shows grain and fruity notes, free of smoke. The palate is smooth and gentle, with sweet malt flavours and subtle fruit accents; some detect applesauce and butter, followed by a peppery tingle at the back of the tongue.
