Smokehead is a peated single malt from an undisclosed Islay distillery, owned by Iain Macleod Distillers. The Rum Rebel makes its mark through unconventional finishing: after maturing in ex-bourbon barrels, the whisky was finished in Caribbean rum casks—a deliberate departure from the peaty Islay template.
This pairing creates an intentional tension between two opposing characters. The expected peat and smoke of Islay collides with tropical fruit and vanilla from the rum wood, layered with sweet notes of marshmallow and caramelized pineapple. The result refuses easy categorization.
On the palate, peatiness reasserts itself with full force, yet tempered by sweetness and oily mouthfeel. Some drinkers find this a successful balance; others see an uneasy compromise between two competing styles. The finish lingers warm, with ashy notes that gradually fade.
