Founded in 1878 on the banks of the Burn of Rothes, Glenrothes has long been Speyside's keeper of elegant, fruit-forward spirit. The 1988 vintage is a study in patience: distilled in that pivotal year, it waited three decades before first release in 2009. A second edition followed, aged longer still in sherry wood and bottled at higher strength, deepening the profile into something altogether richer and more textured.
Matured entirely in sherry casks and butts, this whisky carries the weight of time without heaviness. The balance between aged wood, sherried fruit, and subtle spice is notably restrained—nothing jars or dominates.
On the nose: plum compote, dates, orange zest, acacia honey, and a thread of liquorice. The palate opens with lemon brightness before settling into honeyed fruit—apple, pear, melon—with barley and spice threading through. The finish lingers with warm wood and a faint chalk minerality, unhurried and contemplative.
