Edition No. 5 marks a milestone in The Macallan's story: it is the first in the Edition series created entirely from American oak casks. In 2019, The Macallan handpicked 525 casks specifically for their colour, in partnership with the Pantone Color Institute, to celebrate the natural colour spectrum of the distillery. This was no accident — it reflects The Macallan's obsession with excellence, a legacy tracing back to 1824, when Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and schoolteacher, founded the distillery on a plateau above the River Spey.
Though the casks are purely American oak, a refined interplay between sherry and bourbon influences emerges. The whisky is lightly sherried, yet carries a fragrant, perfumed edge from the bourbon wood.
On the nose, hazelnuts, caramel and toffee unfold, complemented by vanilla and floral tea notes. The palate delivers chewy nougat sweetness, toffee apples, ripe plums and dried orange, with a lingering finish of cinnamon, cocoa and oak tannins. Hints of leather and tobacco add depth, while a subtle ginger note ties it together.
