Longrow is Springbank's peated expression, named after a defunct distillery that once stood next door in Campbeltown. First produced in 1973 as a heavily peated, oily component for blending, Longrow has evolved into a signature style. This 100 Proof bottling is a raw, young expression: matured in refill bourbon casks and finished in Rioja wine casks, it showcases the house character at full strength.
The nose opens with smoked bacon and damp moss, herbal and winey, before citrus breaks through. The palate is oily and textured: plums and cherries, sharp pepper and bitter orange peel, ginger, and a gentle meaty note. Roasted chestnut and light salinity add depth. The finish turns drier and more coastal, mixing smoked berries, black pepper, and mineral notes.
This is unpolished—a starting point for exploring the Springbank signature of oil, smoke, and salt. Batch 2's Rioja finish works better than its Pinot Noir predecessor, avoiding some roughness while maintaining robust character. For those seeking Campbeltown peat without pretence.
