Laphroaig was founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston on the rugged Isle of Islay. Oak Select is not a standard blend, but a composed single malt from five different casks — ex-bourbon, quarter cask, Pedro Ximenez (PX), Oloroso, and new American oak — each with its own maturation period. This multi-cask approach gives the whisky more dimension than single-cask maturation would offer.
The nose reveals Islay's characteristic peat first, followed by ripe red fruits and citrus. The palate opens sweet — vanilla and honey — but is quickly overtaken by dry, ashy peat notes and a hint of saltiness. The finish is lengthy and floral, with marzipan and lime lingering.
Oak Select is an approachable introduction to Laphroaig's style: smoky enough to feel authentic, but not so heavy as to overwhelm. The balance between the sweetness of the sherry casks and the dry peat makes it a versatile dram.
