Masataka Taketsuru, the 'Father of Japanese Whisky', founded Nikka in 1934 with a singular ambition: to craft authentic whisky for Japan. Yoichi, his first distillery on Hokkaido, was built following Scottish principles and still operates with direct coal-fired distillation — a technique now rare worldwide. This Discovery Edition 2022 reveals why Taketsuru selected this remote location: the maritime influence is woven into every expression.

The whisky draws character from a blend of casks of varying ages, with a substantial portion matured in ex-sherry wood. This layering creates depth without sacrificing subtlety. On the nose, smoked grain and a briny sea breeze emerge, underpinned by soft vanilla. The palate opens bright with vanilla and gentle caramel, then pivots sharply to fruit — almost tart — before medicinal smoke and mineral brine take hold.

This is whisky that honours its Scottish inheritance while forging its own identity. Not imitation, but a considered conversation between tradition and place.
