Glenrothes was founded in 1878 and began production on 28 December 1879—the same day the Tay Bridge collapsed near Dundee, an inauspicious start for this Speyside distillery. The name derives from the Earl of Rothes and the Scottish Gaelic word for valley: the Valley of Rothes. This 12-year-old expression matures entirely in ex-sherry casks, which shape its character.
On the nose, the whisky reveals itself quietly: subtle notes of vanilla, banana, and citrus, supported by walnut and apple skin. The palate brings sherry's influence into focus—raisins, caramel, and spice join fruity hints of banana and melon, with touches of cinnamon. The finish is smooth and warm, without aggression.
This is an approachable Speyside that doesn't seek to impress through complexity, but rather through familiarity. Bottled at 40% without chill-filtering, it retains its natural character. For those seeking an uncomplicated, pleasant dram without pretense—ideal as an everyday whisky.
