Miyagikyo

3.8 out of 5 (1 review)

Masataka Taketsuru, the visionary who shaped Japanese whisky, founded Nikka in 1934 with a singular mission: to bring authentic whisky to Japan. After establishing Yoichi on snowy Hokkaido, he opened Miyagikyo in 1969 in Sendai, nestled in the Tōhoku region. That geographic split — the harsh north versus Sendai's temperate climate — remains central to how each distillery expresses itself.

Miyagikyo crafts delicate, unpeated single malts matured in ex-bourbon casks, with a small portion finished in Japanese oak. The mild Sendai climate nurtures a whisky of gentleness and approachability, without sharp edges.

On the nose: floral and orchard-fruit notes—pear, peach, citrus zest—interwoven with light ginger spice and honey. The palate is silky, revealing grainy malt sweetness with subtle smoke undertones; the finish remains refined and restrained, touched by tobacco leaf and oak spice. This is not a showy dram, but one of quiet sophistication—for those who prize nuance over boldness.
