The Spice Tree
About
Compass Box was founded in 2000 by John Glaser, a London bartender determined to make Scotch whisky more interesting. The Spice Tree, released in 2005, stands as one of their most distinctive creations — a blended malt distinguished by unconventional maturation. It draws from three Highland distilleries: 60% Clynelish, 20% Dailuaine, and 20% Teaninich, with a significant portion aged in new French oak casks alongside ex-bourbon barrels. That marriage of young French oak and traditional bourbon wood gives The Spice Tree its defining character: a full, intense whisky where spice and toasty oak take centre stage. This is not a whisper — it's a declaration. On the nose, vanilla, honey, and malt emerge with warm oak undertones. The palate delivers gingerbread, toffee, and peppery spice, while the finish leaves vanilla and pepper lingering. This is a whisky unafraid of flavour — direct, full-bodied, and unapologetic.
