Distillers Edition
About
Lagavulin's Distillers Edition is an annual release that has appeared since 1997—a traditional Islay single malt that gains unexpected depth through secondary maturation in Pedro Ximénez casks. The name reflects the distillers' own craft: a deliberate choice to preserve Lagavulin's defining smoky character while introducing warmth underneath. The nose reveals the characteristic peat intensity of Islay—a smoky, briny presence—followed by dried fruit that glimmers through the smoke. On the palate, an interesting tension emerges: caramel and oak offer counterweight against the saline, mineral undertone. The finish remains smoky and burnt, but not aggressive; the Pedro Ximénez finishing cask brings subtle roundness that tempered the austerity without erasing it. This is Lagavulin for those who sometimes find the pure smoky version too sharp-edged. It delivers that full Islay embrace—the sense of coming home to a windswept island—but with enough sweet comfort to linger longer.
