Coaltown marks the third addition to Kingsbarns' core range, a distillery founded in 2014 in the Scottish Lowlands. Named after Coaltown of Wemyss, a mining village built in the 1890s near Wemyss Castle—the ancestral seat of the Wemyss family behind the distillery—this is Kingsbarns' first peated core expression.
Matured entirely in ex-peated casks, Coaltown preserves the distillery's signature light, fruity character while introducing a gentle layer of smoke. The choice of ex-peated casks allows the delicate spirit to shine through, with smoke and ash as subtle companions rather than dominant forces.
On the nose, grilled banana and citrus peel emerge alongside hints of Scottish heather and soft smoke. The palate brings rose water and buttercream, layered with light leather and charred citrus zest. The finish remains gentle and smoky, holding fruit and peat in easy balance—a whisky that respects both its light distillery character and the nuance of its casks.
