Caol Ila was founded in 1846 by Glasgow businessman Hector Henderson, who selected this site for its rugged isolation, easy sea access, and nearby water source. The name itself tells the story: 'Caol Ila' translates to 'the strait of Islay', the waterway separating Islay from Jura. This 12-year expression is widely regarded as the cleanest and most maritime of the classic Islay malts.

Matured primarily in ex-bourbon casks, this 43% ABV bottling delivers a balanced expression of the distillery's character. A foundation of fresh pear, grassy notes, and a whisper of juniper sets the stage for the signature smoke and brine to emerge.

The nose opens with citrus and subtle peat smoke. On the palate, a soft arrival gives way to coal and tar, with bonfire smoke and a gentle peppery edge. The finish holds the smoky signature with briny, maritime spice that lingers without harshness. This is a whisky that respects the purity of Islay's peat smoke without overwhelming—ideal for those who appreciate the clean, dry side of peated Scotch malt.

Subtle smoke flavor. Not as heavy as the classic Islay smoke. Transitions into a walnut taste. A very good accessible whisky
