Craigellachie was founded in 1891 by Alexander Edward and Sir Peter Mackie at the peak of Scotland's whisky boom. The distillery is known for a robust, muscular character that remains rare in modern Speyside — a profile that sets it apart rather than conforming to regional convention.
This 19-year-old expression matures in a blend of ex-bourbon and first-fill sherry casks, creating intricate layers. The extended maturation draws out Craigellachie's signature identity: a malty core with an unexpected tropical note of pineapple, anchored by a sulphury backbone that adds depth without dominating.
On the palate, an oily, full texture reveals honey, burnt sugar, and notes of walnut and hazelnut alongside that characteristic malty foundation. Apples and raisins emerge alongside a gentle green-fruit tartness, while the finish holds medium length, balancing sweetness with a sharper edge. This is not a smooth Speyside — it is robust and distinctive, exactly as Craigellachie intends.
