Old Ballantruan is a rarity in Speyside: a heavily peated single malt from Tomintoul Distillery, introduced in 2005. The name derives from the Ballantruan spring in the Cromdale Hills, whose pure water is essential to its production. This sets Old Ballantruan apart — while Speyside typically delivers sweet, fruity character, this distillery offers a smoky counterpoint without Islay's medicinal iodine bite.
Distilled from heavily peated barley, Old Ballantruan bottles at 50% ABV to preserve all subtle distillate nuances. The result is a full, punchy palate: barley sugar and toasted cereals anchored by dark, chewy peat and hints of vanilla fudge.
The nose presents pleasant smoke and fruity notes, while the finish lingers with smoke and fine sweetness. This is Speyside peat at its most approachable — smoky without overwhelming.
