About
Kavalan is Taiwan's first whisky distillery, founded in 2005 in Yilan County—a name recalling the ancient Kavalan kingdom. The Solist series represents the distillery's statement: each bottle is a single cask, unblended and unfiltered. The Madeira expression finishes in casks that previously held Madeira wine, the fortified wine from Portugal's Madeira Islands. Madeira casks impart a distinctive richness: oxidative aging through heat creates layered fruit and vinous character. Matured in Taiwan's subtropical climate—intense humidity and meltwaters from Snow Mountain—this whisky ages considerably faster than its Scottish counterparts. The nose unfolds generously: dried fruit, toffee, and vanilla, underpinned by subtle smokiness. The palate follows with dried fruit and almond, the same smoky thread running through. The finish brings spice and wine-like tannins—a dream for those who prize aged sherries and Madeira wines.
