Small Batch
A.D. Rattray's Cask Islay Small Batch is a closed case — a single malt from an undisclosed distillery, where the producer maintains deliberate silence. This mystery is by design: Rattray routinely releases anonymous Islays, letting the liquid speak rather than the label. Small Batch here means only 5–10 casks are vatted together at a time, yielding a limited release.
Matured in bourbon casks and peated to around 35 ppm — enough for clear peat character without domination. This is Islay without theatre: fruit and smoke in conversation, neither drowning the other.
On the nose: warm and robust, with roasted peat and bright citrus emerging behind. The palate is oily and substantial — burnt caramel, rich peated smoke, and grainy sweetness layering together with weight. The finish stays lively and flavourful, peat lingering without harshness.
A whisky that needs few words to make its point.
