Famous Grouse began in 1896 when Matthew Gloag III inherited his family's wine merchant business in Perth and added whisky blending to the operation. What started as a shop in Perthshire became Scotland's leading blend — a position it has held for over four decades. The name draws from the red grouse, a wild moorland bird emblematic of the Scottish Highlands, capturing the rugged character Gloag sought in his blend.
Naked Grouse strips away pretension: no age statement, no fancy packaging, just whisky. It matures in first-fill ex-sherry casks, building a rich, fruity foundation without overwhelming the spirit. The philosophy is directness — quality malt and grain, aged by time-tested methods, bottled at a straightforward 40% ABV.
On the nose: soft and approachable, with malt and sherry cask influence, dried fruit, caramel and a hint of spice. The palate is oily and rounded, offering honey, malt sweetness and gentle peppery notes. The finish is warm and brief, without woody harshness — a whisky that tastes like what it is, nothing more, nothing less.
