This 2013 Glentauchers exemplifies that philosophy. Matured in a refill barrel, a canny cask choice that foregrounds Glentauchers' estery spirit. The result is fresh and fruity, unencumbered by the thick oak influence that can flatten many Speyside bottlings. Bottled at 57.2% cask strength, the balance holds firm. The nose opens on orchard fruit: pears, rhubarb, green plums, with a refreshing minty edge and whispers of green tea and chalk. On the palate it erupts into apple candy, banana, and lemon sweets — utterly fruity, with only a light white-pepper edge. Vanilla cream and powdered sugar add subtle sweetness. The finish is medium, rounded, and brimming with orchard fruit and a subtle peppery note. A dram for summer: youthful in spirit, but without youthful roughness.
