15 Year Old 2009 Refill Hogshead

Aultmore is known for its characterful estery spirit, but this 15-year-old from 2009 takes an unexpected turn. Bottled by Hogshead Imports in 2024 from a refill hogshead (412 bottles), this 48% ABV release departs markedly from the distillery's usual Speyside profile.

The nose opens like stepping into a bodega: dusty and warm, with exotic toasted woods and mulching leaves. Beneath sits a jammy sweetness—cooked strawberries, plums, and a hint of Spanish pan de higo. On the palate, darkness and sweetness intertwine: abundant figs and dates, tobacco leaf, cinnamon pastry, and coffee candy. A distinctive oily, almost industrial note works surprisingly well, adding texture. Drops of old Marsala emerge, followed by cocoa and baking spice (pepper, ginger). The finish is medium length, drying further, with more obvious wood.

This is not typical Aultmore—sherry influence (likely from prior cask history) adds considerable character. A complex dram proving that well-chosen refill hogsheads deliver far more than neutral maturation.
