Big Peat The Leiden Edition Tequila Finish 60.9%

Finish: Tequila Cask

About

Big Peat is a cornerstone of Douglas Laing's Remarkable Regional Malts series, celebrated for its playful limited editions. For Whisky in Leiden 2026, the company created an exclusive tequila cask finish—just 256 bottles bottled specifically for the festival held in a church in Leiden. This Leiden Edition blends classic Islay malts (including Ardbeg, Bowmore and Caol Ila) with a subtly executed tequila finish. At 60.9% ABV, this is a powerful, unfiltered expression that retains the island's signature smokiness without being overwhelmed by agave notes. The nose delivers mineral character, seaweed and damp earth, alongside roasted citrus and a fresh mentholated edge. On the palate, white pepper and medicinal peat take centre stage, supported by lemon juice, soot and roasted herbs. The finish is long and dry, with lingering herbs and campfire ash. The tequila cask adds a subtle spicy dimension without dominating the Islay core.
