About
Big Peat launched in 2009 as Fred Laing's flagship for Douglas Laing's Remarkable Regional Malts series. It is a blended malt that captures Islay's maritime character through a union of Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila, and Port Ellen—each contributing its own smoky signature. At first pour, Big Peat presents as a dense, assertive smoke: campfire ash, soot, and dying embers dominate. The nose, however, reveals depth—honeyed sweetness, vanilla, and a creamy texture push through the peat. On the palate, the character turns medicinal and spiced, with toasted sugar, caramel, and cinnamon heat mingling with thick smoke. The finish lingers with licorice notes and a briny edge. This is not a whisky that hides behind its smoke. It is a full, unapologetic dram with an unexpected sweet undercurrent—a working blend that balances intensity with approachability. For those seeking Islay's complete character without pretense.
