About

Rock Oyster is the Islands expression in Douglas Laing's Remarkable Regional Malts series—a blended malt crafted from malts distilled on Orkney, Arran, Jura, and Islay. Founded in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing, the independent bottler remains family-owned across three generations. The name captures the maritime essence of island whisky: raw, briny, and unapologetically coastal. This 18-year-old marries the smoky, iodine-forward character of Islay with the softer, floral-spiced notes of Arran and its sister islands. The blend is carefully calibrated—Islay's intensity tempered by honey and subtle sweetness from the other components, creating a whisky that feels balanced without losing its edge. On the nose: sea, salt, and sand, with smoky peat, hints of rosemary, and green apple. The palate opens mellow and sweet before savoury notes take hold—honey, barbecued meat, cracked black pepper, and a whisper of wood smoke. The finish is dry and peppery, with lingering iodine and a faint vanilla echo.
