Tamnavulin—Gaelic for 'mill on the hill'—was founded in 1966 by Invergordon Distillers as part of Speyside's post-war modernization. For decades it supplied blended whisky producers, but under Whyte & Mackay's ownership the distillery has gradually stepped into the single malt spotlight. The Double Cask, launched in 2016, marked its first official bottling in two decades and signalled a renewed commitment to the brand.
The whisky matures first in ex-bourbon barrels, then finishes in former sherry casks. This two-stage approach allows the spirit to absorb vanilla and oak spice from the bourbon wood before the sherry cask adds weight and dried-fruit sweetness.
On the nose, warm apple, toffee and honey emerge clearly. The palate is soft and mellow, with gentle tropical fruit and oak tones that reflect the sherry influence without overwhelming the spirit. The finish is clean and straightforward—a whisky built for approachability rather than complexity, and a solid entry point to Speyside's milder end.
