The Coterie Exclusive
Bourbon BarrelFinish: Rum Cask

About

Bunnahabhain—pronounced 'Boon-Na-Haven', meaning 'mouth of the river'—sits on Islay's northeast coast, and this 2012 Coterie Exclusive captures the distillery's maritime character in unconventional form. Bottled for The Coterie, an exclusive whisky society, it combines ex-bourbon maturation with a rum cask finish—a pairing that adds unexpected sweetness and tropical warmth beneath the island's typical briny, peaty backbone. At approximately 8–9 years old and bottled at full cask strength (56.9%), this whisky showcases both vessels uncompromisingly. The rum finish contributes honey, vanilla, and molasses; the bourbon base retains malty depth and oak spice. The result is neither wholly classic Islay nor tropical rum-house—it sits between, pulled in two directions. The nose opens spirity and lightly sweet, revealing lemon custard, white chocolate, and nougat before settling into campfire smoke and iodine-tinged peat. The palate follows with dried fruits, marmalade, and tobacco leaf, anchored by that sweet rum influence. A whisky that rewards patience: put the glass down, come back, and the character shifts.
