Oloroso CaskHogsheadFinish: Refill

About

Watt Whisky, an independent bottler based in Campbeltown, released this Benrinnes via an unconventional maturation journey. It began in a hogshead, was then placed in first-fill Oloroso sherry octaves for two and a half years, and finished in a refill hogshead—an experiment to temper the intense sherry influence. The nose opens with strong notes of blackcurrants, crème de cassis, and After Eight chocolate, followed by lightly charred tones, dried prunes, and coffee grounds. The palate begins with sweet syrupiness that quickly gives way to toasted bread and toffee, with underlying notes of lychee and dark fruits. The finish is medium length with lingering tannins and subtle warmth. This is a Speyside unafraid of dark, roasted notes and ripe sherry influence, yet without overwhelming the spirit. A whisky that lets its complex maturation journey speak in the glass.
