Bourbon Hogshead

About

Miltonduff was founded in 1824 by Andrew Peary and Robert Bain on land formerly owned by the Duff family—whose name lives on in the distillery's identity. This bottling from Watt Whisky, an independent bottler based in Campbeltown, captures the distillery at its most vibrant: a fresh, floral Speyside that defies easy categorization. Matured in a bourbon hogshead for ten years, this 57.1% ABV develops a character that resists formula. The nose is floral and fresh, with tinned peaches, agave nectar, and cantaloupe, layered with a grassy note and a whisper of liquorice. Despite its robust strength, the spirit feels elegant and poised. On the palate, a moderately creamy texture arrives with subtle spice: cracked black pepper, stewed apple, more cantaloupe, and a light lawn-like note. Water softens the spirit further, revealing sugary breakfast cereals beneath. The finish is medium-length, marked by bitter leafy notes, brioche, and lingering melon-like flavours. This is no polished, predictable Speyside—it's characterful and unpredictable, exactly what a well-chosen independent bottling should be.
