Ruadh Maor 14 Year Old Marsala Barrique
About
Ruadh Maor is the name Glenturret uses for their peated single malt—'Ruadh Maor' means 'Big Red' in Scots Gaelic. This 14-year-old is a rarity: Glenturret ceased Ruadh Maor production in 2025, making this Chorlton Whisky bottling particularly scarce. The spirit has matured in an unconventional old marsala barrique, a choice that accentuates the distillery's characteristic wildness. On the nose, smoke dominates: cigars, coal bunker, and an intriguing note of peat-smoked chocolate raisins. Beneath, grilled pears, BBQ meat with burnt lemon, and green walnuts emerge. On the palate, it's full, oily and tarry—salt, coal smoke and pepper lead, with a long, ashy finish that doesn't relent. This is a whisky for those who embrace complexity and unconventional cask marriages. The marsala maturation adds no soft fruit sweetness; instead, it reinforces Glenturret's smoky, passionate character. Bottled at cask strength (57.3%), non-chill filtered and with no added colour, the spirit speaks for itself.
