Uniquely Islay Series 9y
About
Kilchoman was founded in 2005 by Anthony Wills on Islay's west coast—the first new distillery on the island in over a century. This 9-year-old from the Uniquely Islay Series embodies that independent spirit: barley grown on the distillery's own farm, water from Glen Osamail, and a deliberate pursuit of balance between smoke and fruit rather than extremes. The whisky matures in two main cask types: bourbon barrels sourced from Buffalo Trace and oloroso sherry casks. At 54.8% ABV, this is a full, non-chill-filtered expression that lets both wood characters speak—vanilla and crème brûlée from the bourbon, alongside richer notes from the sherry. In the glass, clean, youthful peat smoke emerges (around 50 PPM), soft and unforcing. The nose brings pears in syrup, citrus, and a hint of pipe tobacco. The palate is fruity and creamy with orchard apples, white pepper, and ginger, finishing long and smoky.
