Glenfarclas 105 is a legendary cask-strength whisky launched in 1968 by George Grant as the first core-range bottling at cask strength—an innovation that would redefine Scotch whisky production. The name derives from the 105 imperial proof (60% ABV) at which Grant chose to bottle this Speyside single malt, a decision that was revolutionary for its time.
The whisky matured in a combination of ex-bourbon casks and Spanish oak casks previously used for oloroso or fino sherry. This marriage delivers the 105's signature sherry-forward character without artifice—pure distillery spirit at full proof.
On the nose, dark notes emerge: chocolate-covered raisins, nutmeg, white pepper, with undertones of honey and toffee. The palate is assertive and heavily spiced, with dried fruit and a long, warming finish. This is an uncompromising dram; the full proof pulls no punches. Add water, though, and the sherry unfolds generously, revealing layers beneath the initial intensity.
