A.D. Rattray is an independent bottler known for single cask releases from Scottish distilleries. This 10-year-old Benrinnes was matured in a bourbon barrel and captures the subtle, orchard-fruit character for which the distillery is recognised.
Benrinnes was founded in 1826 by Peter MacKenzie at the foot of Ben Rinnes, a mountain in the Cairngorms that lends its name to the distillery. For nearly two centuries it has remained a quiet presence in Speyside, producing lighter, more delicate spirits than some of its heavier-handed neighbours. At 10 years in bourbon wood, this bottling shows why restraint suits Benrinnes: vanilla and honey emerge from the cask, but the malt and citrus underneath remain clearly visible.
On the nose, leafy green notes and citrus peel lead, with vanilla and honeyed malt in support. The palate brings fresh orchard fruit and almond, warmed by a building peppery spice. The finish holds warmth—honey and dried spices fade gradually. This is a whisky that rewards unhurried sipping rather than bold declarations.
