Speyburn was founded in 1897 by John Hopkins, a successful brandy merchant who selected an idyllic Speyside location for his distillery. The building was designed by Charles Doig, the renowned architect who also pioneered the distinctive pagoda shape found on Scottish distilleries. The 15 Years expression marries whisky matured in ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks, allowing both wood influences to speak.
At 46% ABV, this bottling showcases the interplay between the two cask types. The nose presents dark chocolate, dried apricot, and zesty citrus fruit alongside vanilla notes. The palate unfolds with creamy toffee and honey, then orange and subtle spice. The finish maintains that full body with lingering honey-sweetness and a gentle spiced edge.
This is an approachable, unfussy malt that favours balance over complexity—ideal for those seeking an introduction to Speyside without venturing into challenging territory.
