W.L. Weller
William Larue Weller (1825–1899) was among Kentucky's earliest distillers to swap rye for wheat in his bourbon recipe—a pioneering move that yielded a softer, creamier spirit. The W.L. Weller line, now produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery, carries his name and legacy forward. This is not a generic bourbon; it is built on Weller's original formula, still distinctive in a rye-dominated bourbon landscape.
This bottling is proofed at 114 proof (57.2% ABV by traditional measure), though the stated ABV of 67.4% suggests this is a cask-strength release. The use of wheat instead of rye makes the profile immediately recognizable: softer, with caramel and nougat where you'd otherwise find spice.
The nose opens with caramel and vanilla, followed by citrus and oak. The palate is rounded and balanced, with marshmallow, salted almonds, nougat, figs, and dates—a full, cohesive flavour. The finish is smooth and sweet, with cinnamon and warmth, without the sharp edge rye bourbons often carry.
